Education is the key to success and the Net Generation students are looking for challenges and ways to more effectively and modernly learn the given material. Through research many people have found that students are more receptive to technology in the class and learning in which they feel engaged. ( Beyond Technology). “Technology in the classroom has become empowering and emancipating,” which gives the eager to achieve and newly advanced learners a chance to take control and have voice in what they are learning and the way they best learn. This turns a bit to the idea of the philosopher Lev Vygotsky and cooperative learning and social interaction as a teaching strategy. The way that relates to today is that instead of the teacher lecturing students are exploring through different means of technology to better develop self identity and self-worth. Even though this is a new and upcoming way of making learning more interactive and engaging in the class, does not mean this is the first time for this “Net Generation” to experience the digital world. These youth have grown up in an era that has been surrounded by products that are just a little more technically advanced and being consumers and purchasing all the newest gadgets. So the transition into the classroom as argued by the 5 authors is that with the proper training and money will be easy and necessary. The advancing interaction by students in their learning is ““enabling students to reflect upon, and formalize their existing understandings of the media and material, both as “readers” and as “writers,” in the classroom in which they can express themselves.””
This shift in the use of technology in schools has been around for a few decades. From the first TV to the newest Xbox 360 the way in which technology and media are viewed and valued has largely depended on the culture and advancement society. The “Net Generation” has speed also known as the “Next” generation, the “Digital Media” generation has played a large role in the rapidly advancing , consumer based society that is currently on top. The Net Generation is the period of the late 1980’s through now, who have had the privilege of growing up in a media i.e. Internet dominated culture. According to the article “Growing Up Digital”, the Net Generation refers to the “88 million children in the U.S who are combining demographic muscle with digital mastery to become a force for social interaction.” ( ) This has been the largest population and generation to make such an impact in society both educationally and socially since the baby boomers 40 years ago.
